House of Representatives unanimously passes new grid protection act

On June 9 2010 the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed HR 5026, the Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Defense Act, which would give the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission the Authority to apply regulations to protect the U.S. grid against natural or malicious threats, including both cyber threats and physical threats.  Severe physical threats include nuclear or non-nuclear EMP and severe solar flares.  The legislation now goes to the Senate for review.
