DOE and NERC release report recommending actions for grid protection against severe solar flares, EMP and other serious threats

On June 2, 2010, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published a report on their recent workshop studying “High-Impact, Low-Frequency Event Risk to the North American Bulk Power System.”  This “HILF” report details a broad range of serious threats to the electric grid and the related bulk power system, with substantial detailed material detailing the risk and recommended actions addressing Geomagnetic Disturbance (severe solar flares) and EMP threats.   their report entitled “High-Impact, Low-Frequency Event Risk to the North American Bulk Power System” (“HILF report”).
